Posted in HodgePodge on May 24th, 2007 by burtabreu

Here are a couple quick finds …

e-frontier has a contest with some cool prizes for Anime Studio (formerly Moho) posted here.

Filter Forge is an interesting procedural texture generating plugin for Photoshop. Those who are interested can use the demo version to create presets, and if three of your presets are rated popular by the community you can get a free copy of the product - a $300 value.

ColorWheelPro is a utility which may be of interest to those trying to create harmonius color schemes. It is usually $40 but if you provide a link back to them from your website you can get your copy for free.

May you live as long as the Simpsons …

Posted in HodgePodge on May 22nd, 2007 by burtabreu

This may very well become a common greeting in the future as

The Simpsons continues on, moving into venerable old age without losing its sharp wit.

I caught a glimpse of the behind the scenes magic today thanks to an incredibly nice, former art director turned writer, who goes by the pen name of Aurelio O’ Brien. His invitation to a book signing event resulted in Mark Kirkland arranging for a studio visit to the home of the Simpsons in Burbank, CA. Jason Bikoswski conducted the tour and explained the process, popped us into various departments where we got to meet artists who explained their roles. I peeked under the hood at storyboarding, timing, layout, animatics and other bits. After the tour Ed Ghertner, Aurelio, and myself sat down to lunch and I was thrilled to hear a bit about their battlefield experiences on classics like Beauty and the Beast and Cats Don’t Dance.

I have to say it was a wonderful day. Everyone I spoke to from Mark on down was genuinely nice, in love with the job, extremely competent and working hard. I’m sure this rarified atmosphere is as big a factor in the success of The Simpsons as the writing, the directing, the colors, and the subliminal messages woven into the film. My thanks to all of those who took time out of their busy schedules to make this possible.

Just in case you missed it The Simpsons Movie is slated for release in July.

That First Industry Job

Posted in HodgePodge on May 16th, 2007 by burtabreu

After six weeks of submitting resumees, checking out every online resource I could think of and pestering artists I finally got my first industry job. Woohee!! I’ll be starting at

Animax Entertainment tomorrow. I still feel it must be a dream to be able to create art for a living - I’ll be 48 in a few days but today I feel 20 years younger.

I did a little side job designing a web page as my current job officially ended a week ago. I finished today and start my new job tomorrow - how’s that for cutting it close?

Here’s a snapshot of the page I designed (a few tweaks needed after they give me some images and bios). It’s not my strongest skill, but I did learn a bit of HTML and CSS during my web business days.

That’s it for now. I’m feeling a little uncertain of what will come next, but I also feel grateful, happy and hopeful. Now to start down that path I missed the first time around …

More practice. Think I will do something with simpler lighting next time, not sure how to handle it here -torch light, ice walls, and water running on the floor all reflecting. Love to hear from a pro how you plan lighting for something like this. Share your knowledge, leave a comment!
