Since I’ve been a bit stressed about the job situation I decided to take a crack at an old cartoon idea I had -probably 20+ years ago- when I worked at a place called “The Bottom of the Barrel.”
The simple characters are drawn in Flash and the background in ArtRage. I’m thinking they’ll be mostly static with some simple animation and interactions. Hopefully this will allow me to retain my animation and Flash skills. I plan on posting the first panels this weekend and will try to post weekly my work situation permitting.
Did I say that loud enough? I’m not asking for your first child or money here, so if you have an interest in art why not take a second to help me improve? Thanks!

Couldn’t sleep last night and turned on the PC. Ended up doing an ArtRage doodle - just painted a shape and figured out what it was as I went. Its amazing to me. I can do this much more realistically in Photoshop but not sure I’d like the results better -something about the texture of paint - even digital paint- that is fun.

My wife asked me to add a jaguar to the jungle so I made that my practice for today. The jaguar isn’t very detailed but should work since it is in the background.

Today’s practice with ArtRage. I want to use this as a layer in my next crack at that layout with the temple ruin.

A random visit to a myspace page turned into an unexpected and rewarding contact for me this week. I spotted a writer, who goes by the moniker Aurelio O’ Brien. After reading a very funny sample chapter from his novel Eve and reviewing the cool critter animations he had there, I decided to send him a quick ‘thumbs up’ email message. Time to take
| ArtRage for another spin. As you can see, I don’t have much experience with natural media paint programs - I usually do all of my coloring in Photoshop. At $20 ArtRage is a viable option for almost anyone who wants to try some digital paint.

If you are interested you can see the steps I took to get this done.
I’m going to repaint the entire thing from scratch so don’t be too harsh - I know it sucks. I have already started again to see if I can improve. I’ve fallen in love with the many beautiful background layouts I’ve seen and I’ve decided to dedicate some time each day to try to get better.
Things I know I need to do better …
1. Plan lighting in advance
2. Improve ‘depth’ and leave more of an action area.
3. Plan / organize my layers better.
